Prom (a short name for “Promenade
dance” well no one calls it that anymore) is a semi-formal dance arranged for
teens to have their first ultimate American Adolescent experience. Prom was originally
an event for college students; Co-ed banquets that American universities held
in the 19th century for that year’s graduating class.
History
of prom:
Prom is literally older than
Betty White. No seriously, Betty White was born in 1922 and prom has been a significant part of American culture for at least 50 years before that.
Initially, prom served a function similar to debutante balls for middle-class
girls (that was to find potential suitors) but over the course of years, it has
become more of a recreational even to lay off pressure from teens before they
start college (and adulthood, both can be nerve-wracking tbh). The modern form
of prom for highschoolers started in the 1920s as the age for attending college changed
(from early teens 16-17 to late teens 19-20). Proms really took off in the 1950s, a
postwar era where people just needed a reason to celebrate. The tradition for
dance at prom started in the 1960s.
Prom
Today:
From racially segregated proms
to prohibiting LGBTQ and interracial couples to openly attend the event, American
prom has overcome a lot of prejudice and bias. Proms are now so much more
tolerant than they were in earlier years. We all our prom to be special, a
night that we will always remember and cherish. I grew up watching “10 things I
hate about you” and fantasizing about a prom that romantic. In my teen years, high school musical was there to set expectations, what prom should be but, in
reality, prom mostly consists of a night of dance, booze and a lot of bad
decisions that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.
Prom comes with a lot of
anxiety, choosing the perfect dress, preparing for the after-party, getting a
date for prom (how can people get that though) and most importantly how to
arrive at prom to make a grand entrance everyone will remember. The answer is,
hire a damn limousine. Prom; The night when curfews are broken and limousines have taken for a night of fun-filled adventures.
